Restaurant Week!
It's September, which can only mean one thing. Well, it probably can mean a lot of things, but one is the coming of Restaurant Week, Center City's twice-yearly cheap eats fest. Inflation set in this year, with 3 course dinners for $35 instead of the old standy $30, but it's still a good deal - IF you know how to go about it. Jilladelphia recommends this time of year for trying out a new BYO. That way, you're only paying for your food, and not padding the bill with alcohol, the quickest way to lose any possible Restaurant Week savings! Check out the list of participating spots at http://www.centercityphila.org/life/RestaurantWeek.php

Good feelings for this season, despite Lito's constant whining. We've got some good-looking new talent, that's for sure. And we hear they play ball well, too!! ;0

New Wine and Spirits- Do We Care?
The LCB today announced a complete overhaul/redesign of the current Wine and Spirits format. It's promising better dsigned stores, greater selection, and better educated employees able to make wine and spirit recommendations. There will also be free samples of beverages to go with wht you might be making. And it's supposed to be more consistent. Jilladelphia remembers fililng out this survey many months ago, and our main concern was price. How about we continue to guess at what wine might be good, but we lose a tax instituted as flood relief for a flood that occured 130 years ago??
Foxwoods Resiting Rules
...if it happens. We at Jilladelphia are big fans of the revenue gambling will bring the city. At the same time, and like most others, we're VERY against the waterfront sites. Therefore last week's news that Foxwoods is open to resiting the casino makes us very, very happy. The airport location is genius, given the millions of parking spaces, the captive audiences and the ease it can be reached with an expansion of the Broad Street line. Others (DAG? PlanPhilly? Ms. Saffron? - apologies) have floated another interesting idea, one which would repair another daily reminder of failed Philly planning - a small(er) casino at the 8th and Market site where Disney was once supposed to rise. Once table gaming is legal (and lord, let that be soon - WRITE YOUR CONGRESSMEN!), a smaller casino could be quite profitable there, and not an eyesore. There are a number of great places for the casinos to resituate, such as the Budd factory originallly under consideration for Trumpstreet. Anything not Penn's Landing is an improvement. So keep your fingers crossed and we'll keep you posted!

Le Bec Fin
Will close for renovations, continuing it's "dress down" trend into the dining room decor. It should be down for October/November, reopening in time for the holiday rush. But really, hasn't it lost it's fun now? It seems to us that it will be no different than any other high end restaurant in the city. There was something fun about having to dress up, having to choose from a prix fixe. Our verdict? Boring, Georges. Boring.

PARC IS
LOUD! REALLY, REALLY LOUD!! Oh, ok, sorry - our hearing is readjusting. But yes, Jilladelphia went to Parc on Thursday. It's pretty, it's HUGE, and it's, well, mediocre. The place was so packed we couldnt' get a drink at the bar. The food was (with the exception of a fabulously cheesy and creamy Macaroni "Gratin" - a standard Starr mac-n-cheese variation, as he's got one at each place) just ok. Steak frites failed to move us. Good oysters, but how can you mess up shellfish? We say go for lunch. Or go for a drink in a couple months when the initial crowd thins out. It is good, it is probably going to be as reliable as other Starr places. But if you're looking for gastro-flair, look elsewhere.

Check out Jose going against Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America, August 17th, 9PM!!

Distrito = Delicious!
The Pepto-pink walls may blind you a bit at first, but at Jose Garces' new Distrito that's the only Pepto you'll need. It's HUGE - 200+ seats, and a giant leap from tiny Tinto and Amada. There are visually stunning effects, such as the wall of Mexican wrestling masks, and of course the now-famous VW Bug booth in the front window.
But it's the food (and drinks!) where Garces makes his mark, totally differentiating himself from Steven Starr comparisons. The steak nachos are excellent - cheesy, spicy, but not overstated, and the homemade guac just sings. The only low-note were the tacos. Not bad, just not up to the rest of the menu. Crab and cactus huaraches were a welcome departure from usual Mexican standards of shrimp, steak and chicken. The ceviche list is long - try them all over time! And the carne asada with fried tomatillo is out of this world.
Also take some time to indulge in the margarita list - the Jefe is a great twist on the classic, whereas the Hemingway is a spicy (spicy!) reinterpretation that reminds one of a good bloody mary.
Go - go soon and go often. Oh, and go before the college kids come back. You can still get a table.
PS- Chef Garces was RIGHT behind us all through dinner, running the line. It's cool to see someone actually involved in the operations!

Congrats and Condolences
Jilladelphia is torn over this post - wholehearted congratulations go to Camden's own Aaron McCargo Jr., winner of Food Network's "Next Food Network Star"- his show Big Daddy's House will premiere at 1:30 PM on Sunday! Go Aaron - you've got it going on!
At the same time, we feel very sad for South Philly's own Adam Gertler, who didn't quite entertain us as much as McCargo did, but he sure is pretty! We'd watch your show, Adam - you can put one on for us. ;)

Fly to Lehigh, See Birds for Free
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's that time of year again - training camp. Gotta love watching full grown (and more!) men moving into the dorms, all excited for that back-to-school, back-to-ball feeling. This year's camp hasn't been without injust though - Samuels has already hurt his hammy, and today Chris Clemons (dback) was taken to the hospital for dehydration. Nice to know they leave it all on the field. B Dawk has been quoted as saying he feels just like he did in 2004. Not too shabby and here's hoping. 6 weeks till 9/7, and counting!
Apologies, apologies
Sorry folks, Jilladelphia has been off the ball. But we're back! And it's our birthday. Stayed tuned for some actual posts shortly...
And sorry again.

Adobe Cafe Coming Into Town
Roxborough's beloved Adobe Cafe is opening a south Philly outpost at 1919 E. Passyunk. Known for it's authentic and super tasty Mexican, this place also rocks some serious margs. Should be open in about a month!
Distrito has Cars and Songs!
Getting ready for the opening of Distrito, Jose Garces' newest at 40th and Chestnut in University City. It's got a classic VW which is used for seating, and our favorite bit of news - a purple karaoke room that accomodates up to 20 people! Yay!

Spectrum to Close - Awesomeness to Take it's Place
This Flyers season will mark the end to the iconic Spectrum, where we all remember Sixers, Flyers and Phantoms games, countless Billy Joel concerts, and of course, annual home to Barnum and Bailey's. Sad news indeed, but preliminary plans were annouced earlier this year that include a huge entertainment complex with shopping, arena space, music/movie performance area and a possible hotel/apartment area as well. Ah Philly - it's only getting better.

Chifa is Official
Chifa, the moniker for Jose Garces just announced takeover of 707, is named for the cuisine that will be served - Asian Latin cuisine that originated from Peru after an influx of Chinese immigrants. Set to open early next year, and we like the idea of lo mein and queso!

Tiffin Expands!
Munish Narula, the owner of Tiffin, and long-ago, Jilladelphia's boss at a summer job, is planning to open multiple outposts of the delish, quick delivery Indian restaurant that has taken Philly by storm. Look for a new place to serve Chestnut Hill and Mount Airy, a South Philly location, and most importantly, a Center City location, most likely 11th street near Jefferson. Color us vindaloo!
R Kelly Likes Working Out, Blueberries, Not So Much
R Kelly was in town last week for reasons unknown, but while here was able to spend some quality sweat time with Jilladelphia at our local PSC. That's right, Mr. Kelly likes to stay in shape. But he does not seem to like blueberries, which is sad. He had in his entourage a blumpy looking kid in his late teens whose main job seemed to be standing behind R and watching him work on the elliptical. And then to pick the blueberries out of a package of mixed berries and put them in a separate plastic bag. We at Jilladelphia will be holding auditions soon for our own berry picker. Please leave all eligible resumes in the comments.
Anyway, Dan Gross says R also showed up at G on Saturday. That means he was here all week. Weird - is he even from here?

New Jose Garces!!
Woo-hoo! A new sibling to Amada, Tinto, and the soon-to-open Distrito will be coming to Wash West, as Jose Garces is taking over 707!! No concept yet, other than general yumminess! Big day for food news!

Now you can get some sushi with your suits, as Raw is set to open any day now upstairs at Boyd's (1818 Chestnut). Good luck Tony and Binh!
Cantina Los Caballitos and Royal North!
The owners of town faves Royal Tavern and Cantina Los Caballitos are opening a new place, Cantina Dos Segundos at 931 N. 2nd Stret in NoLibs. Expect 11 different types of marg mixer, a huge tequila selection, and the same high level cooking as the other two places. July opening, with brunch to start on weekends soon after!
Melograno Out
July 27 will be the end of the line for Melograno, the popular BYO at 22nd and Spruce. It'll be replaced by Meme from David Katz. (That's French for "same" - aren't we smart??) No concept yet, but he hopes to sell liquor. Hopefully he'll take reservations, too. Jillaelphia always hated that about Melograno - standing for no reason is no fun...
Anyway, Melograno will be relocating, and set to open at 2010 Sansom in September.

Lane and Mendte - Happy Now?
TO please our anonymous commenter (Mike, is that you?) we will comment on the Alycia Lane-Larry Mendte issue, which we've avoided because it seemed so yucky. However, in today's Inqy comes a story that sums up our icky feelings, and puts both sides on the table. They've both been fired, but things are not always as they seem. The story deals with facts from Lane's lawsuit, and fills in some holes. While we are not saying that she is a total ingenue, every story has two sides. Read and decide for yourself:

I Scream, You Scream
Our personal favorite part of Welcome America kicks off Friday the 4th at Penn's Landing. The All-You-Can-Eat Super Scoop Ice Cream Festival will run from noon-5PM from Friday through Sunday the 6th. Saturday night has additional hours of 6PM-9PM. The cost? A mere $5, for ALL YOU CAN EAT ICE CREAM!! And, it goes to a good cause, as proceeds support the Joshua Kahan Foundation, dedicated to fighting pediatric leukemia. So come on - who doesn't like ice cream? Only Communists...

King of Tandoor is Open for Business
Welcome to King of Tandoor, the latest in a series of new restaurants dotting the stretch of Callowhill between 18th and 19th. It's white-tablecloth Indian with take out available. Stop in and check it out.
Sofitel is SAVED
Stephen Starr has announced that he will NOT be redeveloping Chez Collette at the Sofitel, as was previously reported. While we're big fans of Starr in general, we also think the close location of G Lounge provides the neighborhood with enough d-baggery as it is... Yay!
The Sofitel says a remodeling will take place regardless of the presence of a partner. That's ok too.

Viva El Fuego
El Fuego, the dee-licious Tex Mex at 8th and Walnut, opens it's second location sometime next week (July 5th-ish) at 2104 Chestnut. Patrons can order a beer or marg at the register and take it to their table themselves. Convenience, thy name is cheesy quesadillas...
We're BAAACCKKK!!
Back from vacation on the lovely and HOT Riviera Maya in Mexico, and back to find out that Philadelphia has turned into an anti-Constitution police state in the meantime. Four 20 somethings were detained by police and cited by L&I for three cod violations. And then locked evicted from their home, which is still locked up. Why, you may ask? Because they circulated some "anti-police" petitions. Which made the cops angry. Which made them want to "drum up charges" against the youths. Last time we here at Jilladelphia checked, being anarchist is one of those pesky things protected by the Constitution - one of our rights, if you will. While it may seem unpalatable to those pro-police forces out there, unless one actually breaks the law, one is allowed to protest in many different forms. Gross, Philly PD. Just gross.

Nude, Lewd, Rude? No, Naked Chocolate!!
New Naked Chocolate coming to 18th Street in October. The always dee-lish, tough to walk by chocolatier located now at 13th and Walnut will expand its reach to 18th just north of Chestnut. Same menu, more seating and possibly a patio where one can fight off the autumn chill with a rich cup of cocoa!

Table 31 Opens Plaza Cafe
Table 31, the new steakhouse by Chris Scarduzzio and Georges Perrier, has opened it's outdoor cafe and kitchen on the plaza of the Comcast Center (JFK side, between 17th and 18th). It looks like a refreshing spot, replete with fountains and tables with HUGE umbrellas. Good luck landing a happy hour spot for the next three months...
The Fountain Hits the 21st Century
New to the old Fountain - closed circuit flat-screened TVs installed so viewers can watch head chef Martin Hamann at work. Diners can reserve a private room to watch the magic happen, then have those same dishes delivered to their table within 10 seconds of the grand finale on-screen. It is not, however, cheap. There's a flat booking rate of $250, which is separate from lunch prices of $48-$68pp and dinners from $98-$138 (all without wine). However, if you've for some cash burning a hole in your pocket, it sounds like the new innovation will make for a really complete dining experience.

Update: Tiedhouse
We've received word from Kristin Leonard, owner/proprietor of Tiedhouse that they are hoping for an August open. Tiedhouse is taking over the old Goji space in Cityview Condominiums. Check out our initial report here: http://jilladelphia.blogspot.com/2008/05/tiedhose-small-world.html
SONIC IS COMING!
Sorry for screaming, but Jilladelphia LURVES all things cherry flavored, and Sonic's years of teasing with their cherry-lime soda (Right?? There's nothing on Earth that sounds better!) has us all revved for the announcement that finally, FINALLY Sonic is coming to the area. First one is opening in Royersford soon. Ah sweet, sweet cherry-lime soda, you will soon be ours. Mwa-ha-ha-ha!

Whoa - Bye Bye Striped Bass!
Striped Bass will close at the end of the month for some serious re-tooling, and will reopen as a steak, AND fish-, house. We'll bid welcome to Butcher & Singer Steak and Seafood in the fall, a 1940s type supper club. We think the building's current ambience fits that bill nicely, and in the meantime, hit up the soon to open PArc for all your Starr-fix needs!
Early Dismissal
Sadly not for most Jilladelphia readers, but maybe for some of thier kids. Philly and other area school districts are either closed or are closing at lunch due to the heat emergency. We don't remember getting to stay home for heat, do you??

Bye-bye Sansom Street Oyster House
But only for a little while. Current owner Cary Neff (who also has Coquette in QV) is in bankruptcy protection, but the restaurant is expected to reopen under different management, the property owner's son...
Phew.
Phew.
Bye-bye Top Shelf
Top Shelf, the really gross looking old-man bar at 15th and Arch, is about to close. We here at Jilladelphia have a soft spot for the old watering hole, though. We spent many a quiet summer afternoon there in 2003, and while it's replacement, Big Bang's, a seafood restaurant, will be a definite step up, we'll take a moment of silence...

Tequila Heaven
Welcome Azul Cantina at the corner of 10th and Spruce, across from fellow newcomer Kanella. It's a Mexican and thankfully bears little resemblance to it's predecessor, the barely-edible Sauce. They've got 50 different kinds of tequila!! 40 seats and a VERY large menu. Late night options till 1AM. Let's check it out today!
Table 31 hits a Triple
But not quite a home-run. Jilladelphia was at newly opened Table 31 in the Comcast Center last night to check it out. The service was a bit sloppy in teh beginning, not able to locate a reservatio, a hostess, or our rather large party when we arrived. Things picked up when we got to the table though. With a great list of isgnature cocktails, our minds were quickly taken off the sit-down. Had the delmonico - FAN-tastic. You should go before it's booked up ALL the time, which it will be. We'll be outside all summer long on the patio. Find us at 17th and JFK.

St. George's Greek Fest
We here at Jilladelphia have many friends of Greek heritage. Us, we just love the food. St. George Cathedral is the Greek Orthodox Church at 256 S. 8th Street (8th and Locust) and every year they hold a spring festival full of delicious Greek treats and good Greek music. It'll go from 11AM- 11PM, May 29 through June 1st!
Buy A Wedding!
Getting married? We are, but we've got it covered. If you don't, why not consider doing something good AND taking all that planning stress away. The Omni Hotel, along with tons of other local vendors, is offering a complete wedding package for auction, with all proceeds benefitting Alex's Lemonade. And they mean complete, from ceremony and reception to custom made gown, honeymoon, photo/video and more, there is nothing you'll need to worry about! Please consider this as a MUCH easier way to get married, while making a huge difference in the lives of those with cancer. Check out the website, and put in a bid. We're tempted to do it ourselves anyway.

Who Says the Housing Market Sucks?
Not the good people at Waterfront Square, that's for sure! They're celebrating the opening of a new tower, The Reef, third in a planned five. If you stop by this swanky address on June 5 between 6 and 8:30PM, you'll get a tour of the penthouse, where the John Breslin Trio will be performing. You can take in a fashion show at Green Square, a DJ spinning in a 3 acre garden, food by Cuba Libre, free valet parking and Feng Shui consultations. If that's not enough, there will be a small car show hosted by Devon Hill BMW (isn't it always suspicious when suburban dealers show up at in-city events?) AND (our FAVORITE here at Jilladelphia!) a jewelry show by LAGOS!!
Oh, and they wouldn't hate it if you also picked up a condo or two. You know, to help with the beer money.

Rally for the Boyd
ALERT - at 11:30, Friends of the Boyd will hold a rally in front of the theater in hopes of raising awareness of the need for historical designation. If it's not granted that certification, the next buyer can (and sadly, most likely will) just tear it down. It's in the middle of a hot, hot section of town, next to an empty lot and VERY appealing to developers. Show up and give your support to this effort if you can!

Table 31 TOMORROW
And it sounds WONDERFUL! First off, and most important, that odd looking structure on the JFK side of Comcast Center? Oh yeah, it's an outdoor kitchen which will have patio seating on the plaza. You will find Jilladelphia here each and every Friday this summer, we bet! Continental, kiss my a**!
Now, Michael Klein's Food and Drinq has a food menu with prices. Not cheap, but about average for your Philly steak houses. What's great is you can get human sized portions as well as Texas sized, depending on your appetite. Check out the menu and some preliminary pics here:

A Superstar in the Making, without the attitude?
Things are looking up for the Eagles thanks to their draft pick DeSean Jackson. After 6 punt-return touchdowns in one season, he's definitely fleet of foot, and apparently, anti-diva as well. He may be a bit small, coming into combine at 2 inches shorter and 9 pounds lighter than he was listed in the Cal program, but small can mean fast. Very fast. Read the Inquirer's interview - it sheds bright light on the subject!

Sameric Makes Endangered List
The Boyd Theater on Chestnut Street, known to most of us as the Sameric, has been designated as one of the most endagnered historical sites in America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. LiveNation is the current owner of the property, and bought it with the intention of turning it into a live performance space. Sadly, they're out of the business for now and the place is back on the market. What should we do with it? What would YOU do with it?
Jilladephia hopes it's bought by the Ritz chain, restored and a mix of new releases and classic films could be shown, along with smaller musical and other live performances. We think there's an ability to cast a wide net and that it would be a money maker eventually. We'd pay to see things in grand old movie style!

JL Sullivan's is open for business. With a wide selection of beers, a long wine list and serious cocktails, this is a place to get one's drink on. In secret, of course! But the abundance of flatscreens might mean this place isn't a secret for long, as it will nicely fill the longstanding need for a real sports bar with grown up food. In the Bellevue, 200 S. Broad. Kanella is Open
Welcome Kanella at the old Logan's Diner spot at 10th and Spruce. It's a Cypriot BYO from Konstantinos Pitsilledes, the man behind to former Meze at 8th and Catherine. Look for small plates and homemade flatbreads in a neighborhood bursting with new additions!
Tiedhouse = Small World
New to the Cityview Condominiums, in the space that formerly housed Goji, will be the Tiedhouse, a gastropub from Chris Leonard of the General Lafayette Brewery and Restuarant on Germantown Pike. (Disclaimer: this is interesting news to Jilladelphia, as we personally know the Leonards, particularly the proprietor's wife. Contact us for private details about that.)
Now that that part is out of the way, look for a July opening, dinner and late night Mon-Fri with brunch on weekends. Focus will be small plate, and we'd bet the beer is local. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Cabbies Complain - How Much Do You Care?
This article by Monica Yant Kinney points out the many issues that beset cabbies in our town on a daily basis:(http://www.philly.com/philly/news/columnists/20080514_Monica_Yant_Kinney__Seeing_Phila__through_a_cab_driver_s_window.html). From the threat of physical violence to the exorbitant expenses of operating a licensed cab, they certainly have their share of fair comlpaint. But how many of us have been yelled at, misdirected, cursed, or forced to lsiten to constant cell phone chatter by these same drivers? Is there a happy medium? Maybe, as suggested by the article, they get a living wage guarantee, and we get respect as paying passengers, no matter how we choose to pay...

Earthlink - OUT
Earthlink is leaving Philadelphia - and the Wireless Philadelphia project- early next month. The project has been a spectacular failure from the start, with access limited at best and usually no better than trying to use your neighbor's unsecured network. No firm plans yet for who, if anyone, will take over as service provider for the project, though Mayor Nutter has vowed not to spend city money to shore up Earthlink's responsibilities.

The Closing of Kaizan
Kaizan, the 5 month old Japanese in the Academy House, has closed. This is sad news, as Kaizan had a charming and interactive omikase menu, and a decent wine list. They followed closely on the heels of previous tenatns the Smoked Joint, which lasted roughly a year. The site is hard to see from the street - does that explain it? The owners plan to reopen this fall with a new concept. Wonder what's next for Academy House...
Flyers Funk
It's been a depressing weekend for Flyers fans of all ages. Dropping 2 to Pittsburgh means it doesn't look good. At every other point in the playoffs, we'd manage to regain ground after losing the series opener. We'll keep our fingers crossed but it looks like Billy Penn might win again...

Parc Bistro Set for June
Opening in June, Stephen Starr's latest will have something this city has been waiting for - internal outdoor seating. Yes, folks, we can now enjoy eating al fresco without staring at the dented rear-end of some guy's Volvo! We can imbibe under the stars without sitting next to a street cleaner! More details will follow once a website is up, but for now, here are some details from the Parc Rittenhouse website:

Franklinville Places
This is just cool - read about it!
http://blogs.phillynews.com/inquirer/foodanddrinq/2008/05/abandoned_taproom_may_get_a_li.html
Jilladephia is always happy to hear about new cool places in old abandoned spaces. Nothing brings new life to a neighborhood quite like a bustling resto-bar with great food and better drinks. If it brings people in from out of the area, they may want to stay, and that can only ever be good.

Comcast Market Makes You Fat and Happy in a Gourmet Way
The lineup for the Markeplace at the Comcast Center has just been announced and you'll never need to go anywhere else for a Center City lunch again! The stores will begin to open on June 2, and (courtesy of Michael Klein's Food & Drinq) they include Di Brono Bros.; Termini Bros.; Susanna Foo, whose place will be called Sanxi (up for November); Jake & Max's Deli; Bucks County Coffee Co.; Tokyo Sushi & Catering; LaScala's (the restaurant at Seventh and Chestnut, doing quick-serve pizza and pasta); Frank's Old-Philly Style Sandwiches (run by LaScala's); Under the C (a seafood stand from the operators of Ardmore Seafood at the Ardmore Farmers Market); Sook Hee's Produce (also from Ardmore Seafood); Mexican Post (an offshoot of the local mini-chain, and two blocks from the 16th Street restaurant); and of course Table 31, the Georges Perrier/Chris Scarduzio steakhouse on the street level, opening for beverage service May 18 with lunch and dinner to start June 3.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat...
It's time for the Dad Vail Regatta! This 70 year tradition kicks off May 9th, and is usually the first best place for drunk college kids to meet drunk college kids before summer officially starts. Oh yeah, and there's rowing, too. The banks of the Schuylkill is the place to be this weekend! Check it out:

4th of July Lineup
John Legend will highlight the Welcome America Concert on the Parkway this 4th of July, part of a week's worth of Welcome America events. Fireworks will light up the sky directly after the show (and hopefully this year won't be such a surprise!).
The following night, Philly's own Boys to Men will also perform at a Welcome America event at Penn's Landing. Fireworks will again follow the show.

Cheap Lunch at XIX
Have lunch in the cafe at XIX at the Bellevue for just $19. It includes a salad, meat and cheese buffet, an entree from the kitchen and a dessert buffet! XIX is one of our favorites, with a sommelier who's actually helpful, and a raw bar to die for. It's a real steal at $19!
Oh - and they have balcony seating. Now that the weather is warm, take a long lunch and get some sun, enjoying cheap deliciousness while eye-level with the skyline.

Root is scheduled to open late May, early June at 1033 Spring Garden in yet another sign that the neighborhood is springing to life up there. More details to come.
Apothecary, Apothecary, APOTHECARY
We here at Jilladelphia have been eagerly (understatement) anticipating the opening of Apothecary at 102 S. 13th Street since we first heard of its tasty, tasty-sounding menu of cocktails. And it soft-opens TOMORROW!!

Rittenhouse Roundup
As always, we hit up Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival this year, and as always it was a huge hit. Though cold and a bit dreary, the weather was no match for the day's activities. The annual fashion show went off without a hitch, though judging from the outfits parading down the catwalk, we were a little sad we weren't brought onstage ourselves. There were the usual selction of tasty bites, most for $5 or less. And the highlight - the free cocktail lesson at the Steven Starr Restaurant Organization cooking demonstration tent. We arrived in time to scoop up some deelish lobster risotto and cheese leftover from the last demo, and sat down to samples of three delicious cocktails from the Continental Midtown - two of which are brand new!

Philly Goes Green (Maybe)
Bike sharing may be coming to Philly. Many cities throughout the world encourage their citizens to leave the car at home by providing a bike sharing system. Usually people pay a small fee, either monthly or annually, and are entitled to borrow bicycles from stands around the city. The bikes are then returned to a stand when the rider is done. It's convenient, cheap and great for the environment. The costs will be footed by an ad agency, who in return will get the right to set up additional street furniture (bus stops and benches) around town. With programs in Miami, DC, Paris and now Rome, we really can't afford to be behind the curve. For mroe details, here's this link to the Planphlly.com article:

American Commerce Center Coming Along
Walnut Street Capital, developers of the proposed American Commerce Center at 18th and Arch Streets, met Tuesday with the City Planning Commission to begin the re-zoning process that will allow them to build the fourth tallest building in the country (1500 feet). The ACC as planned includes business, residential and retail space, and is being plugged as the building which will put Philadelphia on the map. (I wonder how the ACC's neighbor, current tallest-building-in-Philadelphia Comcast Center feels about that?)
Within two weeks, the developers expect that both the traffic analysis and a study on the feasibility of connecting the building with SEPTA's underground tunnels will be completed. Check out the whole story at PlanPhilly.com:

A Night in Bella Vista
Oh, last night we had a wonderful, WONDERFUL dinner at James on 8th Street. (http://www.jameson8th.com/). The crispy sweebreads served with soft egg priovided just the right amount of crunch to offset the rich velvet texture of the sweetbreads. The homemade tagliatelle topped with duck ragu and bitter shaved chocolate was dee-lish, the pasta light as tissue, the duck ragu thick with earthy flavor. For a main dish, the potato-encrusted halibut was a solid triple, topped by an out-of-the-park pink snapper in a teriyaki sauce. It ws exactly what you'd expect from a place headed by a guy named by Food and Wine as one of the 20 Best New Chefs of 2008 (http://www.foodandwine.com/bestnewchefs/)
But as always, the atmosphere is what makes James really shine. The talented bartender is a great source of the building's history, providing us with an outline of previous tenants. The place has always housed a restaurant, beginning in the '20s with The Wine Barrel, which turned over into DiTourino's. It then transformed into DeMedici's (anyone see a theme here?) and was last known as Michael's, a restaurant decorated in everyone's favorite suburban-banquet-hall style.
Go, get the Hendricks and Honeydew, relax in the lounge and ALWAYS order the pasta.
Next it was on to Chick's Wine Bar (corner of 7th and Kater), a great local place with an impressive wine list and a more impressive bartender, the only lady who can get the ladies to drink the evil brown liquors. She hides them in delicious girly drinks! (http://www.chickscafe.com/)
These two destinations combined make for a great night out, with flowy drinks, edible flowers - an evening worth the headache the next day!

Go See Sienna's Show at the Wexler
A fan of First Friday? Bored with the usual happy hour routine? This Friday, May 2 at 5PM, our friend Sienna Freeman is curating a show at the famous Wexler Gallery, 201 N. 3rd Street. Called (In)Between, "[t]he exhibition is based loosely on the idea of Vanitas- 16th century Dutch still-life paintings that celebrate life’s pains and pleasures while meditating on their inevitable loss." We are very proud of Sienna, the Associate Director of the Gallery, and urge everyone to go support local artists, decorate your homes better, and get some free wine!

Apothecary is the Coolest
Apothecary is the latest addition to the newly risen Restaurant Row along 13th Street in the newly christened Midtown Village. And oh man! Does it sound cool! The concept is a cocktail restaurant, something this town has been in dire need of. And finally, FINALLY - this place has a roof deck. Previously, the Continental stood alone. Lito and the Jags
Lito might be going to Jacksonville this weekend, in return for a package of 2009 draft picks. Draft picks are NOT Chad Johnson. Draft picks are possibilties, sure, but with a QB entering his 10th season, and a defense full of veterans, don't we owe someone, even ourselves, something better than potential? Come on guys - send Lito to Cincinatti, and have him sit on the doorstep and hold his breath. It's worth the shot...

Draft Madness!
Welcome, welcome brand new Eagles. Did the birds do well for themselves over the marathon weekend? We won't know for sure for another 5 months, but they certainly seem to have drafted a character (and a hottie, but we won't go there) in Trevor Laws, (DT, Notre Dame). Laws led in tackles for losses last year, managing to shine on a sad 3-9 Notre Dame team. And those praying for some new offensive blood may have their prayers answered by Cal's DeSean Jackson, a fantastic punt returner and WR some are saying might be the offensive answer to McNabb's requests. However, he's tiny, at 5'8" and 170. Then again, many used to say Westbrook was too small, too and look what happened there. All in all, an interesting draft weekend, but again, only time will tell if the Birds did well.
http://www.philly.com/philly/hp/news_update/20080428_Paul_Domowitch__3_new_Eagles_could_have_sudden_impact.html
Now, can we please, please try to get Lito out there for a Chad Johnson?? If Coach Reid can manage to pull that off, in addition to our newest draftees and the Samuel signing earlier this year, there's no stopping the Green Machine...

Casino Games and Players
Plan Philly today reports that Rep. Bill DeWeese (D., Fayette, Green, Washington) has introduced Bill 2121 that will allow casinos to expand beyond slots to table games once they've been in operation one year. While we here at Jilladelphia are on the fence about casinos' presence in the city at all, we firmly believe that if it's going to be done, let it be done right. A mini-Vegas on the Riverfront is certainly better than what we have now, and the flood of money table games (full casinos) can bring is undeniable. What do you think?

Restaurants Everywhere!!
Michael Klein's "Table Talk" is a treasure trove of information this week regarding exciting new Center City restaurant openings.
http://www.philly.com/philly/columnists/20080424_Table_Talk__Les_Bon_Temps_rolls_into_Odeon_s_old_spot.html
Les bons Temps is now open at the site of the old TPDS club, and from reports it's been redone beautifully. Dinner now, lunch coming 5.5 (Celebraqte Cinquo de Mayo Cajun style?)
Other city openings include:
Kanella (discussed below) at 10th and Spruce
Union Gourmet Market and Cafe - 11th and Locust (We'll do more digging on this one)
Apothecary - 13th and Sansom
goodburger! - May 3rd at 17th and Chestnut. This is just exciting news, as more top end burger chains only increase the choices - should be tough competition for 5 Guys down the street...
Zahav (the root of which Klein followed in his blog, "The Making of Zahav": read it here:
http://go.philly.com/zahav)
JL Sullivan's Speakeasy, under the Bellevue at the old Chris' Jazz Cafe location
Table 31 at the new Comcast Center, May 18th. See post below re: Scarduzzio and Perrier's new digs
The Eric Ripert label on Broad Street, 10 Arts, is set to open early next month.
Finally, Chima, a Brazilian steakhouse at 20th & JFK is making it's long-awaited debut on Memorial Day weekend.
Lots of reservations to snag - go get 'em!!

Parkway Dig
Just got back from a stroll through Center City, and can report a small bit of progress on the construction site at 16th and Cherry, on the Parkway. The spot is rumored to become the next home of Capriccio, the long-time Warwick coffee house that closed last week. More small cafes, bars and shops are badly needed on the picturesque strip to increase foot traffic and make the street the pedestrian friendly tourist destination as it was first envisioned!
The Fattest City?
Well, not if Nintendo has it's way. The makers of the hugely popular Wii gaming system are soon to introduce the WiiFit, a Balance Board that connects with games that emphasize exercise! Players will have to hold yoga poses, do pushups and other strength-training exercises for a workout that Nintendo promises will be challenging for the whole fam. Check out the MSN article here:

Restaurant Musings (Because we refuse to write Food for Thought)
Two of our favorite Inquirer reporters have to be Michael Klein and Craig Laban, mainly because they tell us about cool new restaurants and bars, and the yumminess factor of each. We can't explain it, but we are FASCINATED by new restaurants/bars and they possibilities they hold. It's more than just a new place to eat, the possibility that it might become an old-standby and the memories we might make there. It's an intangible, something about the whole process that is just intriguing and always so exciting. It's the style involved in the design. It's the new cuisine that might broaden horizons. Mainly, we think it's the possibility that a new place brings to a neighborhood, especially those that are still expanding and growing. A new place in Franklintown means more people coming to Franklintown, which means more life on formerly empty streets which brings more businesses to serve them and more people to live there. This may sound a little crazy but a new restaurant or bar, more than almost any other kind of business, can mean new life for an old place. The magic of economic expansion and growth. And that is one of the most exciting changes anyone who loves this city can see.
That said, here is a link to Craig Laban's online chat for this week, held every Tuesday over at Philly.com:

Polling Hours Extended?
According to the Inquirer, Voter Action, a national voter's rights group, has asked a judge to allow Philadelphia polls to remain open until 10PM tonight. There have been many complaints of broken voting machines. The Committee of 70 claims problems have been normal. This is no real surprise to anyone who's voted in a Philadelphia election before. Broken machines, crooked poll workers - these ARE the norm here. We've worked many election days in Philadelphia, trying to minimize the corruption and underhanded practices, and honestly, we've given up. Any good stories of election days past?

And it's Earth Day, too!
So let's all try to reduce our carbon footprint and skip the plastic bag at the grocery store, ok? Thanks. Thanks a lot.

Table 31 Coming Soon
Table 31 is the name of the new Georges Perrier/Chris Scarduzio joint in the new Comcast Tower. The two formerly worked together at Brasserie Perrier and they've made many changes to the business plan to accomodate 31's opening. Deciding not to compete against themselves, they've revamped the menu at the formerly snobby and overpriced Brass to a true French brasserie, where one can get a killer steak frites for an affordable price.
(Ed. note - the steak frites were admittedly always good and always a pretty good deal compared to the rest of the menu)
Table 31 will be top shelf and it's right across from where we work. Convenient, no? Full report will follow after soft open...

My old hood
is becoming a cluster of new restaurant activity. The old diner standby, Logans, closed for good about four months ago. In it's place, a Greek BYO called Kanella will open this week. Ther is a real shortage of good Greek food in the city (only Effie's and Zorba's really come to mind - Estia is too expensive and a bit flat). Once we get a look at teh menu we'll fill you in.
A new placeis also taking shape across the street at the now defunct Sauce, which may have had one of the worst debuts in the city between poor service, a wine list that came from the bottom shelf of the neighborhood tappy (unforgivable for a wine bar!) and inedible food. No tears there, and let's hope whatever pops in is much-improved. It couldn't be worse...

Comcast's Attempt at Civility
This article in today's Inquirer addresses Comcast's attempts at improving it's image.

I don't know about you, but the only company that has a more frustrating customer service experience is Verizon. I can't stand the rigamarole of "turn off your box for 30 seconds" that one needs to go through even before being able to address the problem. And it's never properly fixed when they DO come out. We've had problems with our HD service from the moment it was installed and no matter how often they come out, it never stays fixed for long. A few days max. And that's if they do manage to show up between the hours they say they'll be there, which last time did NOT happen. When I called to see where they were I was told we had been rescheduled for the next day and oh, they couldn't tell us when. Sigh.
I will believe it is a better run company when I see it. I'l give them 2 points for trying to monitor complaints at least - let's see if I get a response, huh? :)

Hee hee, the Washington Post is sad that their team is losing, and they are crying big, weepy tears about what the Bullies bring to each stomping. They said our women and children "look like they could provide security for Megadeath."

Red, red wine. And white. And sparkling...
The Philadelphia Wine Festival will be held this year at the Convention Center on Saturday, May 10. Over 200 wineries represent from those super famous and expensive ones you've heard of (Cakebread - yums) to those you have not (Grgich Hills - probably yums, too). Picture it - booth after booth of snackies and drinks, all for your sampling pleasure. We are DEFINITELY going to hit this up. Though we may not remember enough to report on it...
Tickets benefit The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (I love drinking for a good cause), and $225 per person VIP; $125 for general admission.
The VIP pre-event tasting runs 5-6:30, and the event itself goes from 6:30 to 9PM.

It's called the Remember Ring, and it kicks ass. It looks like a men's wedding band, but oh it is so much more. All you have to do is program in a date and wear the ring. 24 hours before the magic day, the ring heats up to 120 degrees and gets progressively hotter all day long. Too bad silvercain isn't included...

Time for Time! In Vintage Fashion
Tonight is the grand opening of Time, the new steakhouse/clubhouse dealie from Jason and Delphine Evenchik of Vintage Wine Bar Fame. It's supposed to be pretty swank, which'll be a HUGE change from the rundown ambience of the dearly departed Ludwig's, which occupied that space for seemingly forever. If anyone gets there before me, let me know what you think! Decor, food, especially the wine list - we want to know it all. If not, I'll post about it as soon as I have my first sip and sup. It's always rough going the first three or four weeks, though, so be forgiving.
Crazy Wide Receivers - Do we have a shot??
This just out of Cleveland - Chad Johnson is refusing to report for June's mandatory mini-camp, stating flat-out that he does not want to play for the Cincinnati Bengals, and will not report to "anything." To date the Bengals have remained firm in their claim that they will not trade the troublesome but ultra-talented wide receiver, but perhaps we can interest them in a talented, lightly used, slightly injury-prone cornerback, hmmm??? He's got personality, to be sure, but I'll take some more drama on a Superbowl run!
New Blog, new posts for a New Day!

I've got a deep and abiding love for this place, so I wanted to create a place for fun updates on restaurants, the arts, concerts, happenings, architecture,. development, local politics and more. Anything and everything Philly. I felt like there isn't any one good place to get all the info you need. I'm not able to yet either, but I think together, we can get there. So let me know what's going on. Let me know what you think. Let's have fun together!
